Christmas songs – is it too soon?
It’s getting dark so early at the moment that sometimes we’ve been a bit gloomy in the Bipbox office. We’re beavering away, trying to get the site ready for Christmas. However, this has been a bit of a struggle as you’ll discover in our latest newsletter. We haven’t lost faith though. It does mean that we’ve been looking for ways to make ourselves feel better, and I’ve been thinking – is it too early for a bit of festive cheer?
Christmas is coming – and soon. It’s everywhere already: there are Christmas adverts on the TV, and Christmas decorations are up in shops. Though this happens every year I am constantly surprised by how quickly it arrives; it’s almost as if around the country Halloween decorations come down, and then Christmas decorations go up.
It’s the same for Christmas albums. I would have thought that Christian artists would wait until December, but of course everyone needs to get in there early to give people time to buy presents. Not everyone can be like the winning X Factor contestants and wait until the weekend before the big day to release their music!
The Newsboys have already released ‘Christmas: A Newsboys Holiday.’ This, their first Christmas release, is a five song EP featuring the hymn ‘O Holy Night’ and five more secular but Christmassy tracks. Similarly, Point of Grace have released their fourth Christmas album, ‘Home for the Holidays.’ Again there is a mix of traditional hymns and other songs which impart a less sacred message, from ‘Immanuel’ to ‘Holly Jolly Christmas.’ The astonishing thing is that both these albums have been out since early October!
Now, I am terrible at buying presents, so I always leave it to the last minute. But does anyone really need to get their Christmas gifts organised in October? No. So all I can think is that both the Newsboys and Point of Grace are encouraging me to start listening to their Christmas tracks now! And who am I to argue? I’m starting to feel much better already …
So do you think it’s too soon for Christmas music? Let us know in the comments. Though rest assured, we’ll let you know about even more nearer the time!
